ZHIRINOVSKY, Vladimir Volfovich
Deputy Speaker of the State Duma
Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR)
Born April 25, 1946 in Alma-Ata (now Almaty), Kazakhstan.
Graduated in 1970 from the Moscow State University Institute of Oriental Languages (renamed, in 1972, the Institute of Asia and Africa). Major: "Turkey and the Turkish language.” Graduated in 1977 from the evening-course department of law of Moscow State University.
Holds a doctorate degree in philosophy; defended his dissertation, entitled "The Past, Present and Future of the Russian Nation," on April 24, 1998.
1969-1970, intern at both Gosteleradio (the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Committee) and the State Committee for Foreign Economic Relations of the USSR.
1970-1972, served in the army as a lieutenant in the Caucasus military district.
1972-1975, worked at the Soviet Peace Committee, in the Western Europe section of the international department.
1975-1977, worked in the Office of the Dean of Foreign Students of the Higher School of the Trade Union Movement.
1977-1983, consultant, senior legal adviser in the Europe department of Inyurcollegia (association of lawyers specializing in international law, affiliated with the Ministry of Justice of the USSR).
1983-1990, head of the law department at the Mir Publishing House.
1989, joined the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR).
Since March 31,1990, chairman of the LDPR.
Since 1993, State Duma deputy in the first Duma (member of the Committee for Geopolitics), second Duma (Committee for Defense), third Duma, and fourth (current) Duma (Committee on International Affairs).
1993-2000, head of the LDPR faction in the Duma.
January 2000, elected deputy speaker of the Duma; re-elected January 2004.
Candidate for president in elections held March 2, 2008 - December 2007
Presidential bids:
1991 -- 7.81% of the vote (6,211,007 votes)
1996 -- 5.70% (4,311,479)
2000 – 2.70% (2,026,509)
Speaks English, French, German and Turkish.
Married, with a son.
Wife – Galina Alexandrovna Lebedeva
Son – Igor Vladimirovich Lebedev, Duma deputy and leader of the LDPR faction in the Duma.
