President Yeltsin fired Yastrzhembsky in September 1998 for his opposition to Yeltsin's choice of new prime minister. Sources said Yastrzhembsky tried to persuade Yeltsin to appoint Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov, whom Yeltsin’s inner circle viewed as an enemy. Instead, the post went to Evgeny Primakov. As deputy mayor under Luzhkov, Yastrzhembsky was one of those in charge of the Fatherland-All Russia campaign for Duma elections in 1999. But Fatherland-All Russia finished a disappointing third to the victor, Putin’s Unity party, and in January 2000 Yastrzhemsky returned to the Kremlin administration, when then Acting President Putin appointed him as presidential aide.
