Born December 25, 1951 in Bryansk.
Graduated in 1978 from Perm polytechnical Institute.
Graduated in 1996 from the Moscow Institute of International Business.
Candidate degree in economics.
1990 - 1993, deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of Udmurt SSR for architecture.
June 1993, appointed chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Udmurtiya.
November, 1993, elected deputy of the Federation Council of the RF Federal Assembly.
October 15, 2000, elected first president of the Republic of Udmurtiya.
Married, with two children.
Hobbies: skiing, football, tennis.
