Graduated in 1969 from the Chelyabinsk Politechnical Institute.

Dec. 1995, elected State Duma deputy.
1996, elected governor ot the Chelyabinsk region.
Dec. 2000. re-elected governor.

Married, with two daughters.

Hobbies: chess, fishing.
