SHAIMIYEV, Mintimer Sharipovich
President of the Republic of Tatarstan
Born January 20, 1937 in Anyakovo village, Aktanysh district of Tatarstan.
Graduated in 1959 from M.Gorky Kazan Institute of Agriculture.
1990, elected Chairman of Higher Council of the Tatar SSR.
June 12, 1991, elected first President of the Republic of Tatarstan.
1994 - 2001, member of Federation Council of the RF Federal Assembly.
March 24, 1996, re-elected President of Tatarstan.
March 25, 2001, re-elected to this post for the third term with more than 70% of the vote.
Member of the State Council of Russian Federation.
Married, with two sons.
