SERDYUKOV, Anatoly Eduardovich
Defense Minister of the Russian Federation
Anatoly Serdyukov (Анатолий Эдуардович Сердюков) was born January 8, 1962 in the Kholm Abin region, Krasnodar Territory.
1984 – graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Soviet Trade with a degree in economics
1984-1993 – worked for the firm “LenMebel’Torg” (Leningrad Furniture)
1993-2000 – was the deputy director, then director of marketing, then general director of the firm Furniture Market
2000- received a Ph.D. in economics
2000- became deputy head of the St. Petersburg branch of the Federal Tax Service
November 2001 – promoted to become head the St. Petersburg branch of the Federal Tax Service
2001- completed a second degree in law from St. Petersburg State University
Mar. 2, 2004- appointed deputy tax minister
June 27, 2004 – promoted to head of the Federal Tax Service
Feb.15, 2007 – appointed Defense Minister
Serdyukov has a reputation for toughness, often resorting to bankrupting individuals or companies in debt to the tax service. He was behind the multi-million dollar tax claims that resulted in the dismantling of oil major Yukos. Like Ivanov, Serdyukov is not a career military man. Ivanov’s civilian status caused some difficulties for him as defense minister and it remains to be seen whether Serdyukov will face the same challenges.
September 19, 2007 - Being Viktor Zubkov's son-in-law, Serdyukov had to hand in his resignation to President Vladimir Putin. Zubkov was appointed Prime Minister on the 14th of September. However, this resignation was not accepted.
May 12, 2008 - reappointed Defense Minister under Vladimir Putin's Second Cabinet
