Dec. 1997, first vice-governor of the Leningrad region.
Sept. 1998, appointed acting governor of the Leningrad region.
Sept. 1999, elected governor of the Leningrad region.
Sept. 21, 2003, re-elected to this post with 56,85% of the vote.

Married. With two sons.

Hobbies: chess, traveling.
