RAKHIMOV, Murtaza Gubaidullovich
Former President of the Republic of Bashkortostan
Murtaza Rakhimov (Муртаза Губайдуллович Рахимов) was born on February 7, 1934 in the village of Tavakanovo, Kugarchinsky district, in what was then known as the Bashkir Soviet Socialist Republic. Having served as president of Bashkortostan for 17 years, he resigned on July 15 2010.
Rakhimov graduated in 1964 from the Ufa State Oil Institute. In December 1993 he was elected president of the Republic of Bashkortostan. He was re-elected in June 1998 and December 2003.
Reporting on his resignation in July 2010, The Moscow Times said that he was granted a pension of $24,500 a month and resigned voluntarily during a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The newspaper also reported that his family would continue to receive medical insurance, even after his death. Rakhimov’s presidential term was due to expire in October 2011.
Following Rakhimov’s resignation, Rustem Khamitov, CEO of RusHydro and former presidential envoy to the Republic, was named as acting president.
Rakhimov is married and has one son.
