Born October 27, 1954 in Leningrad
1978 – graduated from the Leningrad Mechanical Institute, with a specialization in Radiomechanical engineering. Later received a secondary degree from the Petersburg International Institute of Management in Economics
1982 – served as an assistant to the rector of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute
Worked at the Soviet embassy in Belgium as an expert for the State Committee on Science and Technology, a position that may have been a cover for work as a KGB agent.
1992-1995 – worked under Vladimir Putin in the St. Petersburg mayor’s office
1995-1997 – worked in the St. Petersburg office of Promstroibank
1998 – appointed head of the Leningrad regional government committee on foreign economic and international ties
2004 – appointed deputy head of the Economic Department of the Russian President
March 2004 – appointed Deputy Chief of Staff under Dmitry Kozak
September 2004 – Replaced Dmitry Kozak as Chief of Staff after Kozak was appointed Presidential Envoy to the North Caucasus
2005 – became Chairman of the Board of Channel 1 television
Feb.15, 2007 – appointed Deputy Prime Minister, will be in charge of foreign trade, particularly with other former Soviet republics, but will continue his duties as chief of staff
Naryshkin will be responsible for the bulk of day-to-day government work, freeing First Deputy Prime Ministers Sergei Ivanov and Dmitry Medvedev to work on the special projects (Military-Industrial Complex and National Projects, respectively) that could bolster their chances to become the next president. Naryshkin’s appointment, possibly the beginning of a government shake-up that could include changes in the ministries of Industry and Energy, Social Development and Health and Economic Development and Trade.
