MARGELYOV, Mikhail Vitalyevich
Chairman of the Federation Council Committee for International Affairs
Born December 22, 1964 in Moscow. His father was a career diplomat; his grandfather was commander of the USSR Airborne Troops for almost twenty five years (until 1979).
1986 - graduated from the Institute of Countries of Asia and Africa at Moscow State University
1984 - began working as translator, international department of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (SPSU) Central Committee
1986-89 - Arabic language instructor of the Higher School of State Security Committee (KGB)
1989-90 - First editor, Arabic editorial division, TASS News Agency (now ITAR-TASS)
1990-95 - held posts in American consulting companies World Resources, Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Company
1995 - general director of Video International Group project for publicity campaign of Grigory Yavlinsky and the Yabloko political party
1996 - participated in President Yeltsin's election campaign
1997-1998 - head, public relations department, Administration of the President.
1998-1999 - held a managerial post at RIA Vesti news agency
1999-2000 - head, Rosinformcentre; member of Putin's electoral headquarters during the 2000 presidential campaign
December 21, 2000 - became a member of the Federation Council from Pskov region; Member of the Committee for International Affairs
February 2002 - became chairman of the Federation Council
January 23, 2003 - elected vice-speaker of Parliament Assembly of European Council
Member of the Committee for International Affairs
Member of the Commissions for Regulations and Parliamentary Procedures and for Supervising Federation Council Activities
Married, with a son (born 1992). His wife is an English teacher
