 Born May 26, 1947 in Zakharovka village of Kirovograd region, Ukraine.
1965 - graduated with honors from the Nikolayevsk Institute of Ship Construction
October 1995 - elected deputy, then chairman, of the Volgograd City Duma
December 29, 1996 - elected governor of Volgograd region
December 24, 2000 - reelected governor for the second term
Married, with two children and two granddaughters
