Vladimir Lisin
Chairman of the Board, Novolipetsk Steel
Vladimir Lisin (Владимир Сергеевич Лисин) was born May 7, 1956 in the Russian city of Ivanovo.
Lisin worked as a welder while studying at the Siberian Metallurgical institute, from which he graduated in 1979. In the early 1980s, he worked his way up the hierarchy of the Karaganda Steel Plant in Kazakhstan. During this time he reported to Oleg Soskovets, and became director of TSK-Steel, a private firm set up by Soskovets. By 1991, Lisin was deputy director of the Karaganda steel plant.
In the mid 1990s he sat in various positions on the board of directors of the Sayan Aluminium Plant and received a PhD in technical science from Plekhanov Russian Academy of Economics in 1994. He has also sat on the board of the Magnitogorsk steelworks. Lisin has received a number of awards in Russia, including the Council of Ministers Prize in Science and Engineering, the Order of Honor of the Russian Federation and the Order of St. Sergei Radonezhsky.
Since 1996, when he was appointed to the board, Lisin has been involved in the Novolipetsk steelworks (NLMK). In 2002 Lisin bought out Vladimir Potanin’s stake in Novolipetsk to become the steelworks’ sole owner. In December of 2005, Lisin listed Novolipetsk on the London Stock Exchange, earning $600 million.
In 2010 Forbes magazine named Lisin as Russia’s richest man, estimating he is worth $15.8 billion. He is married and has three children.
