GORDEYEV, Alexei Vasilyevich
Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation
Alexei Gordeyev (Алексей Васильевич Гордеев) was born February 28, 1955 in Frankfurt an der Oder, German Democratic Republic (East Germany) to a family of a military serviceman. Gordeyev would stay in Germany for approximately three years, before moving to Russia where his parents originated. He would move to the village of Uryadino in the Kasimov Region, Ryazan Oblast. However, he would spent his formative years in Magadan, where he was a schoolpupil.
From 1973 to 1978 Gordeyev studied at the Moscow Institute of Railroad Engineers. From 1978 to 1980 he served as an Soviet army officers with the railroad forces in the Khabarovsk Territory, and partook in the construction of the Baikal-Amur railway line. After his service in the army, Gordeyev returned to Moscow where he would work as senior foreman for the SU No.4 repair-construction department of the Moskvorech Region of the city.
In 1981 Gordeyev began to work at the central administrative board of logistics at the Ministry of Fruit and Vegetable Economy of the Russian Soviet Republic. At the beginning of involvement with the board, he served as chief mechanic, as chief of the department of building and wood materials in 1983 and as deputy chief of the board in 1985. In 1986 Gordeyev worked as the deputy chief of the department of production and distribution of tare for the central administrative board of material support of the Russian Soviet Republic's State Agricultural Committee. Following that, he was appointed deputy director general of logistics for Moskva agroindustrial complex. In 1989 Gordeyev became chairman of Agropromservis production division of Moskva agroindustrial complex. In 1991 he was made director general of Argopromservis.
In 1992 Gordeyev graduated from the Academy of National Economy of the Government of the Russian Federation. In the same year he became deputy chief of administration of Lyuberetsky District, Moscow Oblast.
In 1997 Gordeyev was appointed chief of the Department of Economy and a member of the board at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Russian Federation. In 1998 he was named First Deputy of the aforementioned ministry. At the beginning of 1999 Gordeyev was elected deputy chairman of Mikhail Lapshin's Agrarian Party.
On August 19, 1999 Gordeyev was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Food of the Russian Federation. From May 2000 to March 2004 he was both Agriculture Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in Mikhail Kasyanov's government. In 2002 Gordeyev became chairman of Russian Agrarian Movement (RAD). In March 2004 he was made Minister of Agriculture in Mikhail Fradkov's cabinet, while in September he retained such position under the new Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov.
In October 2007 Gordeyev led the regional list of United Russia deputy candidates in the Ryazan Oblast for the State Duma elections. After his party's victory, he refused the deputy mandate.
On May 12, 2008 Gordeyev was reappointed as Minister of Agriculture under Vladimir Putin's second cabinet.
Gordeyev is married, has one son and one daughter. He has a Ph.D-equivalent degree (Kandidat of Economic Sciences). He is a holder of the Order of Honor, and has been bestowed with the awards "For Services to the Fatherland" of the 3rd Degree and "For Services to the Fatherland" of the 2nd Degree. He also has the medals "For the Construction of the Baikal-Amur Railway Line", "For the Transformation of Non-Chernozem Lands of the Russian Soviet Republic" and "For Sacrifical Service."
