1980 - graduated from the law faculty of Kazan State University
1985 - completed postgraduate courses at the Institute of State and Law of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow
1993 - elected to the State Duma of the Russian Federation
Dec. 26, 1994 - elected president of the Republic of Chuvashia
Dec. 28, 1997 and Dec. 16, 2001 - re-elected president of Chuvashia

Married, with two children
