2008 Presidential Election
Bogdanov is one of three contenders in Russia's presidential election and the only independent candidate. He collected the required 2 million signatures to secure a place on the ballot in elections on March 2. His party, the Democratic Party of Russia, is widely seen as a Kremlin-backed spoiler intended to siphon off votes from larger parties with liberal views. Bogdanov's quixotic campaign has received little coverage in the media leading up to elections.
He favors stronger ties with Europe and promised that, if elected, Russia's national soccer team would win the next World Cup competition. In December Duma elections, the Democratic party received less than 1 percent of the vote, amounting to some 90,000 supporters.
