ALKHANOV, Alu Dadashevich

Former President of the Republic of Chechnya
Born January 20, 1957 in Kazakhstan.
Served in the army after graduating from high school
1983 - joined the police force upon graduating from the transport police academy in Mogilev, Belarus
Graduated from the USSR Academy of the Ministry of Interior Affairs
1992-1997 - deputy head, and later head, of the North Caucasus Transportation Department, under the joint Chechnya-Ingushetia government
2000-2003 - head of the Interior Ministry Department of Transportation in Grozny, Republic of Chechnya.
April 16, 2003 - appointed minister of Interior Affairs of the Republic of Chechnya
Aug. 29, 2004 - elected president of the Republic of Chechnya with 73,7% of the vote, filling the position left empty by the assassination of Akhmad Kadyrov on May 9, 2004
Feb. 15, 2007 - removed as president of Chechnya and replaced by Ramzan Kadyrov, in a move expected since Kadyrov turned 30 in October 2006; appointed deputy justice minister
Married, with three children
Master of sports in judo.
