Economy: Tomsk has large reserves of oil, gas and iron. The region also has the largest peat reserves in Russia. In addition, Tomsk region is home to the Siberian Chemical Complex, one of Russia's largest nuclear industry enterprises, that produces nuclear power and heating. in November 2005, the city of Tomsk was named a special economic zone for technology research.
In December 2006 a delegation from Tomsk Region gave a presentation at the French Embassy in Moscow and signed with it a protocol on cooperation. The document envisages exchanging information, studying French experience related to special economic zones, and promoting efforts to establish contacts between universities in Tomsk and France.
