Geography: The Taimyr Autonomous Area occupies the Taimyr Peninsula to its extreme end at Chelyuskin Cape, including the islands between the Yenisei Gulf and Khatanga Gulf, the northern part of central Siberia, and the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago. It is the only subject of the Russian Federation located entirely above the Arctic Circle. The area borders on Yakutia, the Evenk Autonomous Area , Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area and has a coastline on the Kara and Laptev Seas.

Ethnic make-up: more than 110 nationalities including Russians (67.1%), Dolgans (8.8%), Ukrainians (8.6%), Nenets (4.4%), and Nganasans (1.5%)
Economy: The Taimyr Autonomous Area is one of the least economically developed subjects of the Russian Federation. The largest enterprise in the region is the Norilsk mining company. About 60% of the residents of the area are affliated with Norilsk, which owns rail lines and ports in addition to mines. Traditionally, the Taimyrs were engaged in reindeer herding and fur trapping, and these enterprises still exist on a small scale.
