Geography: The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is located in the extreme northern part of Eurasia. Most of the territory lies above the Arctic Circle. The republic shares a border with the Krasnoyarsk and Khabarovsk territories, Irkutsk, Amur and Chita regions, and the Chukotka Autonomous District. Its has 4500 km of coastline on the Laptev and East Siberian seas.
Urban population: 64%, Rural population: 36%
Ethnic make-up: includes Russians (50.3%), Sakhas (33.4%) and Ukrainians (7%)
Economy: Yakutia's economy is mainly based around its mineral deposits. Diamond mining is the leading sector of the republic's mining industry. Coal, oil, and gas have been discovered in more than 20% of Yakutia's continental territory and there are currently 900 explored deposits of hard, brown, and coking coal.
Standard & Poor’s has confirmed the ruA national credit rating for the Republic of Sakha (foreign currency liabilities rating BBB+/Stable/A-2, local currency liabilities rating A-/Stable/A-2, and national rating ruAAA). Yakutia’s rating is limited by its geographic remoteness and a high concentration of its taxation base. These factors restrain the republic’s economic growth, creating relative commitments and lowering the budget’s predictability and stability.
The per capita income in the region is relatively high and fund management there is improving. Other positive elements are immense reserves of minerals, which can attract big investments to the republic’s economy, and stable mid-term positions of the ALROSA diamond producing company (BB/Positive/B), which accounts for almost half of Yakutia’s budget revenues. In addition, several big investment projects in the oil and gas sector were launched in 2006.
