Geography: Ryazan Region is located in the central part of European Russia. It borders Vladimir, Nizhny Novgorod, Penza, Tula and Moscow regions. The region is mostly plain and the Oka river flows through the territory.

Economy: Because the soils of the region are subject to significant water erosion, the soils in 19 of the 25 districts in Ryazan Region have been exposed to radioactive contamination as a result of the Chernobyl disaster, agriculture is not part of Ryazan's economy. The industrial sector of the economy is mostly engaged in manufacturing heavy machinery and metalworking.
International agency Fitch Ratings has assigned to Ryazan Region (about 150 miles southeast of Moscow) foreign and local currency long-term ratings B+, short-term rating B, and long-term local rating A(rus). The outlook for the long-term ratings is Stable. The ratings reflect the region’s diversified and growing economy ensuring a stable increase of tax revenues, low indebtedness, and increasing reliance on its own revenues in financing expenditures.
