Geography: Pskov Region is located in the Western part of European Russia. It shares a border with Belarus, Estonia and Latvia, making it the only Russian regions to have a border with three countries. Pskov Region is considered one of the most ecologically clean Russian regions. There are more than 600 rivers and 3700 lakes with a total area of 3261 km2, including the largest lake in Europe, Pskovsko-Chudskoe.

Economy: Pskov has a mixed industrial and agricultural economy. Engineering is one of the region's leading industrial sectors and mainly specializes in electrical engineering producing low-power electric motors, welding equipment, automotive electrical equipment, household electrical appliances, electric cable, automatic telephone exchanges, and radio components. The dominant agricultural sectors are flax production, beef and dairy farming, and vegetable production.
In 2007 Pskov administration plans to double spending on development year-on-year, to Rbs500 mln ($19.08 mln). This increase is stipulated by the region’s draft budget. Of this sum, Rbs300 mln ($11.45 mln) is to be spent on capital construction and the remaining Rbs200 mln ($7.63 mln) on targeted regional programmes.
Pskov regions' state debt decreased by Rbs783 mln ($29.6 mln) to Rbs620.143 mln ($23.4 mln) in 2006, amounting to Rbs1.602 bln ($60.4 mln) as of January 1, 2005. The region has repaid commercial banks’ loans (Rbs318.3 mln or $12.0 mln) and the loans taken from the Finance Ministry in 2003 for preparations for the winter season (Rbs180 mln or $6.6 mln). In late 2006, the region’s farming loans worth Rbs11 mln ($415,25) were written off having wholly complied with obligations and commitments under financial policy. The region’s debts also decreased due to changes in the exchange rate differences under dollar-denominated loans.
The aggregate turnover of companies and organisations in the Pskov region grew by 17% in 2006 against 2005 to Rbs100.513 bln ($3.79 bln). Turnover in agricultural, forestry and hunting organisations was up 8% to Rbs2.811 bln ($105.96 mln), of manufacturing companies up 20% to Rbs28.441 bln ($1.07 bln) and of producers of other non-metal mineral products up 34% to Rbs2.062 bln ($77.72 mln). Turnover in metal production and manufacturing of ready metal products grew by 28% to Rbs599 mln ($22.58 mln), in manufacturing of machines and equipment (excluding weapons and ammunition) by 40% to Rbs2.54 bln ($95.74 mln), in manufacturing of electric, electronic and optical equipment by 21% to Rbs6.791 bln ($255.97 mln).
