Geography: The Republic of North Ossetia is located in the center of the Caucasus, therefore the territory is very mountainous and filled with steep gorges.  The republic shares a border with the South Ossetia province of Georgia, Chechnya, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.

Urban population: 66%,  Rural population: 34%

Ethnic make-up: More than 90 different nationalities, including Ossetians (53%), Russians (30%), Ingush (5%) and Armenians (2%)

Economy:  Despite the proximity of the republic to Chechnya, North Ossetia is trying to develop its tourist industry. There are nearly 3000 historical monuments in the republic and more than half of the its area is occupied bv Alania National Park, the North Ossetia National Preserve, and game preserves. There are more than 250 therapeutic, mineral, and freshwater springs in the republic. Besides providing the basis for health spas, these mineral waters also have the potential to be bottled and sold.  The agricultural sector of the economy produces wheat, corn, and sunflowers.
