Geography: Novgorod Region is located in northwest Russia between Pskov, Tver, Leningrad, and Vologda regions.  The region's topography consists of low hilly plains and a large number of lakes. Lake Ilmen is located in the western part of the region and the Valdai Hills rise in the eastern part.

Urban population: 70%,  Rural population: 30%

Economy: Novgorod Region is noted for its science- and labor-intensive sectors, particularly the chemical and forest industries. The engineering and metalworking, electronics, chemical, forest, woodworking, and pulp and paper industries produce nearly half of the region's marketable commodities. Because of its long history, Novgorod is also a center of both Russian and international tourism.

Loan investment in the Novgorod Region will grow 22.5% year-on-year in 2007, according to an economic forecast drafted by the regional government. The Novgorod division of Sberbank, Slavyanbank and Novobank (Novgorod), branches of Uralsib, Promsvyazbank, the Baltic Bank and Rosselkhozbank are providing funds for investment. As part of the national project on affordable housing for Russian citizens, Sberbank’s Novgorod division is opening three-year credit lines to finance the construction of communal infrastructure. Together with the Novgorod branch of Rosselkhozbank, it will carry out investment projects to build and modernise animal husbandry farms (to the sum of Rbs150 mln, or $5.68 mln) and provide loans to individual household plots as part of the national project on developing agriculture. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will be involved in these projects, which will make loans more easily accessible to small businesses.
