Economy: Murmansk is Russia's largest ice-free port and the main base for the country's fishing industry.  Murmansk is also engaged in developing gas fields in the Barents Sea, including the Shtokmanovskoe gas condensate field.  In addition, the region is trying to develop a tourist industry aimed at Scandinavians and featuring one-day cross-border hikes, safaris, ski races through three countries, and visits to historical and cultural monuments.
