Geography: Magadan is located in the extreme northeastern part of Siberia and includes the Chukotka Autonomous District.  It is situated on the Kolyma and Chutkotka uplands and the Anadyr Plateau. The Kolyma and Anadyr rivers flow through the region.  Most of Magadan's soil is permafrost and tundra

Ethnic make-up:

Economy: Magadan has many gold, silver and coal reserves, so mining is a major industry.  In addition, the region possesses the largest port in northeastern Russia, therefore shipping and fishing are also major industries.  Magadan was the transfer point for prisoners headed to the Gulag, so it has developed some tourist industry around this history. 

Polymetal Mining Holding intend to increase production in their plant at the Dukat deposit in Magadan by 50% (investment $40-$50 mln), to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Gold: The state mineral resources commission has returned calculations at the Natalkinskoye gold deposit, teh exploration license for which belongs to Rudnik Matrosova, incorporated into Polyus Gold. The commission ruled that B+C1+C2 reserves amounting to 1,500.8 metric tons of gold at a content of 12.7 g per metric ton be added to the explored reserves at the Natalkinskoye deposit. Polyus Gold's strategic Investment Plan envisages an investment of $1.5 bln with the commercial development of the deposit scheduled for 2012. After the project reaches design capacity, it should produce about 30 metric tons (1 mln oz) of gold annually.
