Geography: Kurgan is located in the southern part of the Ural mountains.  It shares a border with Kazakhstan and the Sverdlov, Chelyabinsk and Tyumen regions.  The Tobol river runs through the region and most of the territory is covered with forests or lakes. 

Urban population: 56%, Rural population: 44%

Ethnic make-up: Russian (92%) with small numbers of Tatars, Bashkirs, Kazakhs and Ukrainians

Economy: The region's economy is a mix of agriculture and industry, but the region's economy primarily benefits from oil and gas pipelines carrying these products from the oil fields of neighboring Tyumen and Tomsk to processing facilities in the Urals.  Kurgan is also known for producing military combat vehicles and medical products such as insulin and anitbiotics.
