On 1st July 2007, Koryakia will be merged with Kamchatka, to form Kamchatka Krai, a Russian federal region. THe merge was approved by a referendum on 23rd October 2005.

Geography: The Koryak Autonomous Area is located on the northern Kamchatka Peninsula as well as the adjoining part of the mainland and Karaginsky Island. It has coastlines on the Bering Sea and Sea of Okhotsk. The region shares a border with Kamchatka andd Magadan regions. The Koryak Autonomous Area is one Russia's most northerly and least populated territories. The Koryak and Kolyma mountains are located within the area. The area is situated in the forest tundra zone and therefore tundra and boggy soils predominate.
Urban population: 26%, Rural population: 74%
Ethnic make-up: more than 30 nationalities including Russians (62%), Koryaks (16.4%), Ukrainians (7.2%), Chukchis (3.6%) and Itelmen (3.0%)
Economy: Because of the region's location on the sea, the fishing industry is the leading industrial sector. The area is also known for Kamchatka crab. The tundra's most important resource is Iceland moss, the primary food of reindeer, and reindeer breeding is an important industry among the native peoples. Because the region is so ecologically pure and full of unique topography, the area is trying to develop an economic sector in eco-tourism.
