Geography: Kaluga is located in the eastern part of European Russia. It borders Moscow, Tula, Bryansk and Smolensk regions.  Most of the territory is situated on a plain.  The Oka and Desna rivers flow through the region. 

The Kaluga Region has rich deposits of brown coal (36% of total brown coal reserves of the Central Federal District), 17% of phosphate rock, 13% of lime, and 10% of diatomite

Economy: While Kaluga does have a well-developed industrial sector centered around engineering and metalworking, it is best known as one of Russia's largest scientific centers.  A large scientific research complex is located in the city of Obninsk. The laboratories there carry out innovative research and development work in the areas of atomic energy, space technology and robotics.

Investment in Kaluga increased 7% in 2006, totalling over $450 million. Foreign Direct Investment in Kaluga Region reached $400mn over 2001-2006. The region has 300 enterprises with foreign capital. In 2006, foreign investment in the region totaled some $150mn and it is planned to double the figure in 2007. Companies such as German carmaker Volkswagen, Serbia and Montenegro’s Hemopharm medicine producer, Switzerland’s producer of pet foods Nestle Purina PetCare, Germany’s Siemens producing household equipment, and Sweden’s Volvo car manufacturer, have projects in the region.

Finnish company Kiilto will build a factory producing dry pack mortar in the Maloyaroslavets District in Kaluga in 2007.

Germany’s largest agricultural machine building firms, Grimme – the world leader in equipment for potato planting, processing and storage – and Lemken – Germany’s leader in tillage and sowing equipment – have signed an agreement with the Kaluga region to construct two plants to produce tillage tools and potato planting equipment in the village of Detchino.

The President of Finland’s NWH Sourcing Veronika Braithwaite and vice president Edward Blomstedt visited the Sukreml iron foundry plant in feb '07, during which, they agreed the plant would produce drain covers to export to Finland. The Sukreml plant is Russia’s largest producer of cast items for sewage systems and storm water drains.
