Geography: Kalmykia is located in the southeastern part of European Russia.  It shares a border with the Rostov, Volograd and Astrakhan regions and the Republic of Dagestan.  The region is very arid and borders on semi-desert.

Ethnic make-up:

Economy: Kalmyks traditionally bred and raised livestock.  They breed thoroughbred horses and raise several different kinds of sheep for both meat and wool.
