Geography: Ivanovo Region is located in the central part of European Russia 300 km northeast of Moscow. It is situated in the center of the Russian Plain in marshy woodlands with lakes and peat bogs. Most of the region lies between the Volga and Klyazma rivers. It borders Nizhny Novgorod, Yaroslavl, Vladimir and Kostroma regions.
Urban population: 83%, Rural population: 17%.
Ethnic make-up:
Economy: The leading industrial sectors in Ivanovo Region are the textile, engineering and chemical industries. It is the country's third-largest manufacturer of woolen and linen fabrics and seventh-largest manufacturer of silk fabrics. The old artistic trades of lacquer work and miniature painting are also well developed.
The first stage of restoring the Ivanovo Airport was completed in 2006 and the 2.5 km-long landing strip can now accomodate Tu-154 airliners. The second stage involves lengthening teh landing strips for Tu-76 aircraft. The regional administration hope to begin regular business-class aviation in the region in summer 2007. A timber-processing plant built by Austrian-based Egger is implementing a second development phase in 2007. The Economic Development and Trade Ministry has raised the region’s ranking in terms of investment attractiveness from 46th to 19th.
