On 1st January 2007 Evenkia and Taimyr will be merged to form Krasnoyarsk Krai.

Area: 767,600 square km (296,294 sq. miles)

Capital: Tura (population 5,500), 5,378km from Moscow

Federal district: Siberian

Economic region: East Siberia

Time zone: Moscow +4, GMT +7, EST +12

Geography: Evenkia occupies the central part of the Central Siberian Plateau in the basin of the Podkamennaya and Lower Tunguska rivers. The Yenisei River also flows through the district.  The geographic center of Russia is near Vivi Lake. The area borders on Krasnoyarsk Territory, Irkutsk Region, Taimyr (Dolgan-Nenets) Autonomous Area, and Yakutia.

Urban population: 33%, Rural population: 67%

Ethnic make-up: including Russians (67.5%), Evenk (14%), Ukrainian (5.3%), Yakut (3.8%)

Economy: In spite of large mineral deposits, the area is among Russia's most economically underdeveloped regions.  Since the fall of the Soviet Union, industrial and agricultural production has virtually ceased. Attempts to start commercial development of explored oil and gas fields and other mineral resources have so far failed to produce any real results.
