Geography: Dagestan is the largest Russian republic in the Caucasus. It borders on Kalmykia, Stavropol, Chechnya, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Dagestand also hasa long coastline on the Caspian Sea. Dagestan's topography is dominated by the Greater Caucasus mountain ranges The Sulak River also flows through the republic.

Ethnic make-up: more than 110 nationalities including Avars, Dargins, Lezgins, Kumyks, Laks and Russians.
Economy: Apart from producing hydroelectric power, Dagestan is primarily agricultural. Major agricultural sectors include. Agriculture comprises grain and vegetable cultivation, fruit- and winegrowing, sheep farming, and beef and dairy cattle farming. There is also a thriving industry in national crafts, including carpet-weaving and wood carving.
In 2006, the republic's tax agencies collected Rbs13.3 bln ($503.98 mln) in taxes and payments to the republic’s budgets, including Rbs4 bln ($151.57 mln) to the federal budget, Rbs5.8 bln ($219.78 mln) to the consolidated budget of Dagestan, and Rbs3.5 bln ($132.63 mln) as unified social tax and insurance payments to state extra-budgetary funds. The absolute growth of federal budget revenues was 30.8% (Rbs942.3 mln, or $35.71 mln), of Dagestan’s consolidated budget revenues 36.3% (Rbs1.534 bln or $58.13 mln), of unified social tax and insurance payments to extra-budgetary funds, including social insurance spending, 31.4% (Rbs845.8 mln or $32.05 mln).
