Founded: 1937

Geography: Chita region is located in the Eastern Transbaikal area and has borders with the Buryat Republic, Yakutia, Mongolia, and China.  The largest rivers are the Shilka and Argun, which feed into the Amur River.  More than 50% of Chita is covered with mountain taiga forests.  The southern part of the region is steppe. CHita is also site for teh largest rail border crossing between Russia & China (Zabaikalsk).

Ethnic make-up: includes Russians (88.4%), Buryats (4.8%), Ukrainians (2.8%)

Economy: The region's leading industrial sectors are mining and metallurgy. Agriculture specialities include reindeer, cattle, and sheep. Cultivated crops include rye, oats, barley, and spring wheat. In addition, Chita is one of Russia's premier resort areas, second only to the Caucasus in this respect. Almost all kinds of mineral water occur here including a huge number of lakes with deposits of various therapeutic muds.

Budget revenues in 2006 went up Rbs337.3 mln ($12.7 mln) to Rbs17.9994 bln ($679.5 mln), and budget deficit went down Rbs449.5 mln (almost $17 mln). Taking into account the above amendments, the regional budget has increased by Rbs4 bln ($151 mln).

The Zabaikalsk Railway PR service reported that in 2006 exports to and imports from China through the Zabaikalsk-Manchuria railway pass increased 18.4% to some 21.109 mln metric tons against 2005. Chinese imports totalled 1.024 mln metric tons, and exports to China amounted to 20.085 mln metric tons. These indices were achieved owing to the reconstruction of the Karymskaya-Zabaikalsk railway sector. The implementation of the investment project for the reconstruction of the above sector worth Rbs14 bln ($527.11 mln) should increase its carrying capacity 100-150%.In particular, oil transportation will rise to 15 mln metric tons a year.
