Geography: Karachayevo-Cherkessia is located near the Russian Caucasus and shares a boundary with Krasnodar Territory, the Kabardino-Balkar Republic, Georgia and Abkhazia. Most of the republic is mountainous. The republic has an abundance of water resources. There are about 130 glacial lakes and more than 170 rivers flowing through the republic, the largest of which are the Kuban, Urup and Laba rivers. The Bolshoi Stavropolsky canal system supplying water to Stavropol Territory is also located in the republic.

Ethnic make-up: Russians (42.4%), Karachays and Circassians (40.2%), Abazians (6%) and Nogai (3.2%)
Economy: Karachayevo-Cherkessia has both industrial and agricultural components to its economy. Major industrial sectors include rubber and cement production and coal mining. Agriculture is centered around the production of wool, but the region also grows wheat, corn, barley, sugar beets, and sunflowers.
