Geography: Bashkortostan occupies most of the southern part of the Ural mountains.  It is European Russia's link to Siberia.  It borders Perm, Chelyabinsk and Tatarstan.  The Belaya River, part of the Unified Deepwater Transport System, flows through the region.

Ethnic make-up: more than 100 different nationalities, including Bashkirs, Russians and Tatars

Economy: Bashkortostan has a very diversified industry structure but focuses on chemical processing.  The republic produces industrial alcohols, pesticides and plastics. Bashkortostan also has a large agricultural base and is known for high-quality produce.

In 2007, the gross regional product of the republic was 645 billion roubles (more than 18 billion euro), an 8 percent increase over 2006. The gross regional product per capita was about 160 thousand roubles (4,500 euro).

The republic
processes more oil raw materials than any other Russian region, about 26 million tons of oil or 17 percent of all of Russia's gasoline for automobiles and 15 percent of diesel fuel. Issued mineral oil is competitive in the internal and external markets and corresponds to the quality standards "Euro-3" and "Euro-4". Depth of oil raw materials processing reaches more than 80 percent while the average Russian indicator is 72 percent, according to the president's press office.
