Economy: Arkhangelsk is primarily involved in shipping, fishing and other sea-related industries.  Because much of the territory is also covered in taiga forest, logging and paper-processing are also major industries. A programme of prospective forest management development has been drafted by the regional administration. It is expected to bring Rbs10.5-13 bln ($395.5-$490 mln) of investment into the industry, depending on the growth rate. The programme envisages improving forest felling, introducing flexible technological processes, increasing labour productivity, designing modern and competitive furniture collections, and developing facilities producing environmentally safe wood houses. The region will set up five new conservatory forest farms, lay 500-700 km of roads for timber transportation, complete the construction of the Belkomur railway, and build new plants.

In 2006, Severalmaz, a subsidiary of Alrosa, Russia’s leading rough diamond producer, increased its ore output at the Lomonosov diamond deposit in the Arkhangelsk Region more than 150% to 850,000 metric tons. In 2006 mining operations by the Lomonosovsky ore mining and processing plant amounted to 3.120 mln cu m against 2.867 mln cu m in 2005. Last year the plant started to work at full capacity of 1 mln metric tons of processed ore a year. According to expert estimates, the Lomonosov diamond deposit accounted for 20% of all Russian reserves. The deposit’s reserves are estimated at $12 bln.
