Geography: The Republic of Altai is located virtually at the geographic center of Asia, in the southern Siberian taiga, and borders three foreign countries: China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan. The republic is located in the Altai mountain range and is home to Mount Belukha, the highest point in Siberia, as well as the highest peak in the Altai Mountains.

Urban population: 26%, Rural population: 74%

Ethnic make-up: includes Russians (63%), Altaians (31%), and Kazakhs (6%)

Economy: The economy in Altai is agriculturally-based.  Most Altaians are engaged in distant-pasture livestock raising, breeding horses, deer and downy goats.  Residents of the taiga also are engaged in bee-keeping.
