The Republic of Adygeya’s constitution was adopted in May 1995. The state is headed by a president, who serves a five-year term. Only candidates proficient in the Adyghe language, an official language alongside Russian in the republic, are eligible to run for president. Previously an elected office, the current president, Aslan Tkhakushinov, was the first to be directly appointed by the Russian president in 2006.  
The Republic of Adygeya also has a state assembly, known as the Khase. Consisting of a council of representatives and a council of the republic, a total of 27 deputies are elected to each council every five years. A prime minister is appointed by the president, with approval from the Khase. Three representatives from the republic sit in the Russian federal government, one in the State Duma and two on the Federation Council.

Geography: The Republic of Adygeya is located in the western part of the Caucasus. surrounded entirely by Krasnodar Territory. The highest mountain is Chugush (3,238 m). Forests make up 40% of the territory of the region. The main rivers are the Kuban and the Belaya.

Population: The ethnic make-up of the republic includes Russians (67%), Adygeyans (23%), Ukrainians, Armenians, Tatars, and Georgians. The urban population is53% abd the rural population is 47%

Economy: Adygeya is mainly agricultural, producing grain, sunflowers and tobacco.  The regions' climate also allows for wine-making and bee-keeping.  Adygeya has supplemented this agricultural base with industry including traditional timber and woodworking as well as mechanical engineering and metal-working.  Adygeya is also a center for both winter and summer tourism with good cross-country and downhill skiing, sanatoriums and therapeutic hot springs and mud baths.
