Party History

The party Rodina was created out of the “Party of Russian regions” (PRR), which was formed in 1998 as a public organization, and was transformed into a political party in 2002. The main founders of the party were representatives of student and youth organizations, territorial trade-union associations, regional medium and small business, scientific societies of Russian regions.

According to the program of the “Party of Russian regions” the principal course of action of the party in 1998-2002 was not its participation in election campaigns, but “formation of necessary public opinion”. In a congress in September 2002, five co-chairmen of the party “Rodina” were chosen, among who were U.V. Skokov, O.I. Denisov, O.E. Kutafin, S.Z. Sultanov and V.V. Chistiakov.

In 2003 known political activists Dmitri Rogozin and Sergei Glazyev also became co-chairmen of the party. On September 14, 2003 by the initiative of “Party of Russian Regions” a joint conference of three political parties, PRR, Socialistic Soul Party of Russia and Party of National Revival “Will of people”, took place. The joint conference of the three parties took the decision of forming an electoral unit “Rodina” in order to participate in elections to State Duma in December 2003.

In the elections to State Duma, which took place on December 7th, 2003, Rodina received a sensational number of votes, receiving more than 9% of the vote and was able to form the third largest faction of deputies in the State Duma.

During a congress that took place on July 6th, 2004 Rodina approved a new edition of the party’s Statutes and a new slogan - “For Motherland and Justice.” The leader of the Rodina faction in the State Duma, Dmitri Rogozin, was chosen the sole chairman of the party. The party’s presidium was formed with Alexander Babakov as chairman. New staff was added to Political council of the party with Yury Skokov chosen as a chairman.

On June 11, 2005 the Fifth Party Congress took place in Moscow. For the first time in the history of congresses of Russian political parties, a large foreign delegation of like-minded foreign political parties also took part in the congress.
