Gay rights activists face a continually hostile climate in Russia. Annual gay pride events have been scheduled to take place in Moscow since 2006, but have consistently been refused authorization by Mayor Yuri Luzhkov. Protests in 2006-2008 against this refusal to authorize the march were marred by homophobic violence. This was avoided in 2009 when the event, timed to coincide with the Eurovision Song Contest, was relocated at the last minute. All demonstrations were organized by Nikolai Alekseev and the Russian LGBT Human Rights Project Gayrussia.ru. Despite opposition, a number of organizations continute to campaign for gay rights in the capital and throughout Russia.
