The long-dormant conflict between Moldova and the breakaway republic of Transdnestr flared up following the imposition of new customs regulations by Ukraine. Neither side seems willing to back down and it remains to be seen how long Transdnester can hold out as its economy grinds to a halt. If Transdnestr succeeds in bringing the case to the International Court of Arbitration, the republic may finally get the attention it needs to force a decision on its status once and for all.
