An article in Russian Newsweek has raised the prospect of a return to the death penalty. The presidential administration has distanced itself from the claims – a spokesperson said earlier this week that there was “nothing” to suggest that Russia would end its moratorium on capital punishment. But the measure would be unquestionably popular, and the consequent break with European law might be welcomed by some hardliners.
