Last week, Freedom House, a U.S.-based NGO that conducts research and advocacy of democracy, political freedom and human rights, labeled Russia as an authoritarian regime, topping off nearly a decade of similar accusations from Western governments and other NGOs. But even though drawing parallels between China, Iran and Russia may be misleading, the country is still reminiscent of the Soviet Union, albeit in a slightly different way.
