For the first time since last year’s five-day war, the Belarusian authorities took some concrete steps in broaching the question of officially recognizing South Ossetia and Abkhazia. On November 5, the deputies from the two chambers of Belarus’ national parliament formed a group that has been entrusted with preparing some recommendations on the issue for the presidential administration. Does this mean that “the ice has broken” and Belarus will soon become the fourth (or fifth, if Ecuador does it earlier) country to recognize the independence of Georgia’s two former autonomies?
