Kyrgyzstan has been playing its geopolitical cards well. Having taken a large financial package from Russia to close down the U.S. base at Manas, critical for the American campaign in Afghanistan, Bishkek then turned around and allowed the Americans to re-open the facility at a higher rent. Russia has fought back with plans to open a second military base in the south of the country. With creeping authoritarianism overtaking Kyrgyzstan, the local political opposition is now pointing the finger at the Kremlin.
