Now that Central Asian states appear to be building a gas cartel of their own, by bringing existing gas prices up to European standards in 2009, Ukraine’s usual threat to purchase gas directly from Central Asia meant to prevent Russia from raising its own prices, no longer seems valid. Ukraine’s recent foreign policy aimed at NATO integration with little regard for Russia makes it even more vulnerable.
