On Wednesday evening Russians and Germans came together at the opening of a photography exhibition entitled “The Fall of the Berlin Wall” on the Manezh Square in central Moscow. The former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev was also present, and spoke of the importance and symbolism of the events of 1989. The exhibit traced the wall's history and its photographs revealed the human tragedy during its existence, as well as the celebration and the triumph of German citizens when the wall fell twenty years ago. Many of those who attended the opening used the opportunity to stress the importance of learning from this period in history.
