As of January 1, 2006, the Komi-Permyatsky Autonomous Area united with the Perm region to form the Perm Territory.

Geography: Perm is located in the Kama river region and borders the republics of Komi, Bashkortostan and Udmurtia

Ethnic make-up: Russians (59.7%),  Komi-Permyaks (22.1%), Tatars (2.9%), Ukrainians (1.1%), Belarusians (0.4%) and Bashkirs (0.05%)

Economy: Due to the dense forests in the region, the area's leading economic sectors are forestry and woodworking. Other developed sectors include engineering and fur trapping. Livestock breeding is the most developed agricultural sector. Cultivated crops include rye, wheat, barley, oats, potatoes, and other vegetables. The city of Perm is a major center of heavy industry, primarily engineering, which manufactures processing and production equipment for the metallurgical, mining, and forest industries as well as electrical components, aircraft engines, machine tools and river ships. Perm is also famous for its musical and theatrical traditions.
