Geography: Magadan is located in the extreme northeastern part of Siberia and includes the Chukotka Autonomous District. It is situated on the Kolyma and Chutkotka uplands and the Anadyr Plateau. The Kolyma and Anadyr rivers flow through the region. Most of Magadan is covered in permafrost and tundra.

Urban population: 92%,  Rural population: 8%

Economy: Magadan has many gold, silver and coal reserves, so mining is a major industry. In addition, the region possesses the largest port in northeastern Russia, therefore shipping and fishing are also major industries. Magadan was the transfer point for prisoners headed to the Gulag, so it has developed some tourist industry around this history. Magadan also has huge gold deposits.
