Kamchatka Territory

On 1st July 2007, Kamchatka Region was merged with Koryaksky Autonomous District to form Kamchatka Territory

Capital: Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (population 194,431), 7,985 km from Moscow

Geography: Kamchatka includes the entire Kamchatka Peninsula, the adjoining mainland, and the Komandorsky Islands. It borders the Sea of Okhotsk, the Bering Sea, and the Pacific Ocean.  There are more than 160 volcanoes in the region, including 28 active ones, a large number of mineral and hot springs, mud volcanoes and boiling lakes. The Penzhina, Avacha and Bolshaya are the major rivers in the region.

Urban population: 81%, Rural population: 19%

Economy: Because of its location on the water, major industries in Kamchatka include shipping and fishing. Its unique topography also allows for the production of geothemal energy.
